The 1691 Hearth Tax Rolls for Ayrshire

In 1690 a one-off tax payable at Candlemas - 2nd February 1691 took place although it took until 1694 before most of the tax was collected and in some instances there are no records of the tax having been collected.

The tax was introduced in an attempt to pay back monies advanced to the Shires and Burghs and to reduce the arrears of the army. The Parliament of Scotland granted a tax of 14 shillings (70p in today's money) on each hearth in Scotland. Hospitals and paupers on Poor Parish Rolls were exempted.

Parliament appointed James Melville of Cassingray as the principal collector. Sub collectors were then appointed to draw up lists of the hearths within their specified areas.

For the genealogist the Rolls provide one of the earliest and fullest list of people in each area.

In Ayrshire the form of the rolls varies between bailliaries and also between the parishes in a bailliary. In Ayrshire the 3 bailliaries are Carrick, Cunninghame and Kyle.

Various publications and sources are now available for those wishing to study or make use of the data collected.
