Robert
Burns: a Life -
By Ian Mcintyre |
|
No poet
has attracted such fanatical devotion as Robert Burns. He was, according
to Lord Byron, a man of extremes: "tenderness, roughness -
delicacy, coarseness - sentiment, sensuality - dirt and deity". Ian
McIntyre's biography gives a careful analysis of Burns's songs and
poetry and strips away the legend to explore what lies beneath. The
figure that emerges is sharper, less idealized, perhaps more truly
great, than in any previous biography. |

The
Canongate Burns
Robert Burns, Andrew Noble (Editor), Patrick Scott Hogg (Editor) The editors, Andrew Noble and Patrick
Scott Hogg, have both written and edited several books, including other
titles on Robert Burns. |

|
This is the ultimate
word on Burns; a collection of every single song and poem written by
Scotland's best know bard. It seems that everyone
knows something about Robert Burns, with his life and work celebrated
the world over. Despite being born to a poor farming family in Ayrshire,
Burns was well educated, with superb English and French. His first collection
of poetry was a huge success, but instead, of receiving a handsome
income, the myth of a 'heaven-taught ploughman' was created. Although
lionised by the Edinburgh establishment, his financial state forced him
to return to farming. He continued to write hundreds of poems and
collected, wrote and rewrote a vast collection of old Scots songs.
The Canongate Burns
not only includes his entire oeuvre, but also half a dozen poems never
before attributed to him. These poems were first published in London
magazines at the end of the eighteenth century, but the author most
likely kept himself anonymous because of their treasonable content.
The extensive Scots
glossary, explanatory footnotes, chronological listing of the major
poems and fascinating introduction have created a breathtaking volume,
and a major publishing event for Scots Literature. |

Ae Fond Kiss
Robert Burns, Donny O'Rourke (Editor) |
|
This book contains the passionate
correspondence between Robert Burns and Agnes McLehose. Edited by
well-known poet and broadcaster Donny O'Rourke, it appears as a major film
based on the ill-fated love affair is about to go into production.
According to Donny, 'Theirs was a love story to rank with the great ones.
The whole scenario was powerfully cinematic. Now, it cries out for and
looks likely to get the big-screen treatment for real.' |

Collected
Works of Robert Burns
Robert Burns, William Scott Douglas (Editor) |
|
Synopsis
Numerous collected editions of Burns's work have been published. William
Scott Douglas' six-volume, 19th-century edition aims to provide a complete
and scholarly collection of Burns's work. The first three volumes contain
the poetry, and the prose works in the three final volumes include some 68
previously unpublished letters or parts of letters. Robert Burns
(1759-1796) was the eldest son of seven children, born to a cotter near
Alloway in Ayrshire, Scotland. He received a broad education, reading
voraciously and aquiring a thorough grounding in English and a knowledge
of Mathematics and French. He began writing occasional verses whilst still
at school and was writing prolifically by 1784. When his first collection,
"Poems, chiefly in the Scottish Dialect", was published in
Kilmarnock in 1786, it was an immediate success. Burns wrote with equal
facility in English and in his native Scots, the Scottish poems owing much
to old Scottish songs and the early Scottish poets. |

Understanding
Robert Burns
George Scott Wilkie |

|
Synopsis
Although recognised throughout the world, the poems of Robert Burns are
rarely understood. Many lovers of his poetry and songs have struggled with
the meanings of many of the bard's words. This book aims to give reades an
immediate understanding of 138 of his poems. Opposite every stanza of each
poem, the meaning of what Burns wrote is given, along with a glossary.
Thus, alongside lines from "Ode to a Mouse" ("Wee sleekit,
cow'rin', tim'rous beastie, Oh, what a panic's in thy breastie!") the
author explains that "Burns is doing his utmost to assure this
terrified little creature that it is quite safe, that he has no intention
of causing it any harm". |
