This is from Genealogy, probate and family history research in Northern Ireland.
Aberdeenshire (Catholic) Ayrshire (Presbyterian) So it seems. Can we assume a certain person was wrong saying
our CONNs came from Aberdeenshire?

[CONN] they were Scottish emigrants to Ireland. >From Blacks Surnames of Scotland:
CONN. An old name in Aberdeenshire, where there was a prominent Roman Catholic family of the name, Con or Cone of Auchry, in the parish of
Monquhitter. They claimed to be a branch of the Clan Donald (Archxeologia Scotica,
rv, p. 376), the surname being assumed from the traditional name of the Clan,
`Siol Cuin' or 'Con.' They were designated of Auchry before 1539. George
Con or Conwus (as his name was Latinized), the Pope's agent at the court of
the queen of Charles r ( 1636? 1639 ), was the most prominent of the name.
Alexander Cone in Auchry is mentioned in 1522. The family were driven into
exile soon after 1642 (Aberdeen Jour. Notes and queries, in, p. 82). In the
birth brieve of Gilbert Chalmer, 1650, the Cons or Cones of Auchry are
said to be descended from William Con [five generations earlier] "lauchfull
sone{Lawful son} to Donald of the Iles and Kyntyr, chief of the Mackdonald" (
SCM., v, p. 334 ). William Conn witnessed the laird of Balfour's bond in
1552 ( SCM., Iv, p. 222), Thomas Con was a merchant in Glasgow, 1606, and in
1640 there is record of payment to Thomas Con, post, in Aberdeen ( SCM.,
v, p. 156), and John Con, flesher in Edinburgh, is recorded in 1508 ( EBR.,
p. 114 ).
( 2) Conn is also an Ayrshire surname, and Dobie suggests that it is an abridgement of PETCON, q.v. Johannes Con, burgess of Irvine, 1499
(Simon, 29). Conne 1690.

The Conns of Magilligan came to Ulster after 1608. The first of the name was Thomas Conn found in 1631 as a tenant of Sir Thomas Phillips in Limavady.
It is likely, that in common with the other Scottish tenants in the district, he was from Ayrshire.
Civil registration of births was first introduced in Ireland in 1864, so before this date we are dependent on finding evidence of a person's
birth [and the names of the parents} from a Church record of baptism. Unfortunately there are no surviving 17th century Church registers for
Magilligan, so it would now be impossible to establish family relationships..
