I've watched with interest how the spelling of the surname Fowlds has changed as I move backwards in time. Fowlds, to Faulds, to Ffaulds, and now ffoulds. The single "f" is now "ff" in many words.

After that we're in an earlier book, whose pages are only about 2.5 inches wide I'd say, and maybe 11 inches tall. Now there's not as much order in the pages, and empty spaces are filled with entries from various years, to fill the page up, often written turned upside down. Thus are written 7 burials for 1747, upside down on a partial page of 1703 marriages. I'm sure paper was quite expensive then.  - Jim Bundy
